Frequently Asked Questions
What is coaching and how is it different from other helping modalities?
Coaching is a partnership designed for doing deep, transformational work based on your specific goals and objectives. It is a safe space to explore ideas and opportunities without judgment or criticism. Coaching is action-oriented and serves as a bridge between where you currently are and where you want to be. I’ll partner with you and help you develop realistic, tangible goals to achieve success, whatever your definition. Nothing is off-limits for discussion and exploration. Not only will we create a vision and actions to move you forward, I’ll do whatever I can to help you do what you say you’ll do.
vs. Psychotherapy:
While psychotherapy often delves into the past with the goal of healing past hurts, coaching looks at past events and the impact of those events to see how they create patterns that show up for you in the present. Therapists typically focus on past problems, while coaches focus on present-day solutions.
vs. Consulting or Mentoring:
I will never come to a session with an agenda or pre-determined solutions and strategies. I will, however, come with tools and methods for a fresh approach to tackle the barriers that you are facing. You are the expert in your life. I will use my expertise as a coach to listen and ask questions; together we will develop a plan.
vs. Friendship:
Never underestimate the importance of a close friend! However, often in difficult situations, friends may become too deeply involved in your story to remain truly neutral and judgment-free. This comes from a conflicting desire to support you and also support their own wishes as they relate to you.
How long will it take before I see results?
This is an important question. It really varies — depending on whether you come into coaching with a specific, measurable issue or goal or whether you are looking for a lifestyle shift. A life transition can be one or the other or a combination of the two. With the latter, we will look holistically at how you engage in the various areas of your life.
The coaching process works best when addressed on a weekly basis, and in most cases, major, sustainable transformations — in behavior and outcome — can be experienced within the first 3 months. Depending on what you’d like to work on, and how specific your goals are, you will likely begin to notice change after a session or two.
The most valuable thing I can impart here is that it depends on you. Coaching is a collaboration. There are no miracles. You must be willing to show up and do the work.
Also, whether you decide to work with me or another coach, the coaching process works. You owe it to yourself to take this important step.
What kind of work will I have to do on my own?
We may make use of any of a number of different tools and resources including interactive activities, visioning, assessments, journals, etc. I may assign “homework” to help you process whatever came up during the session and encourage you to dig deeper. A lot of the growth happens between sessions, as you reflect on our work.
